Another Evening of Etching

Last night's efforts included....
etching pieces of German silver (nickel silver) and discs of brass.
After neutralizing the etchant, I annealed the German silver which brought out lovely flashes of color.
As is typical, I do not have specific plans for this newly etched metal.....yet.

  2. lynsey- I love how colors like this are often an unexpected surprise. I know that some jewelers have great control over the colors that they develop with a torch, but I am not one of those people. My reaction is usually, "Whoa...that's so cool!"

  3. There's so much beautiful detail in the etching...did you stamp them with stazOn?

I've only etched on copper with Etchant from Radio Shack. I'm very interested in trying nickel silver. What etchant are you using, if I may ask?

The colors from the heat are fantastic!

  4. Lela- I did use StazOn. I find that the SatzOn ink holds up well for around an hour. After that, it appears to begin to break down. I do most of my etching at metals studio in one of the local art centers and the etchant is pruchased in large quantities. While it's not from Radio Shak, it's the same thing- ferric chloride which works beautifully on copper, nickel and brass.
